Data sources and methodology

The official statistics, census publications and methods behind our population data.

The primary sources are the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS), national and provincial statistical yearbooks, the 2000, 2010 and 2020 population census publications, and official administrative division information.

Resident population usually refers to people living in an area for six months or more. Hukou population refers to household registration. Area is land area in square kilometres. Density is resident population divided by land area. GDP is reported in current Chinese yuan; income figures are disposable income per capita.

Missing values are left blank rather than estimated. Rankings exclude regions without a valid value. When a year is not specified, the most recent available year is used. Always check the reference year before comparing places.

Figures in the demonstration installation are synthetic and labelled as demo data. Production deployments read from the original regional database.
